Twenty Questions with Elora Norman

Tonight marks the beginning of a new feature on the blog called ‘Twenty Questions’ in which I ask somebody twenty quick-fire, intimate questions about themselves. These aren’t celebrities or well-known personalities and most of them I don’t know.

My hope is that by taking a peak into someone else’s soul you will realise how, despite our fundamental differences, we still have very similar insecurities, make similar mistakes and have fought battles to become the people we are today.

unnamed-1

Elora Norman, 23

What is your full name?

Elora Leigh Szymanik Norman.

How old are you?

23.

How old do you feel?

I want to say a solid……16. Mum still hangs my laundry out.

Where were you born?

Auckland.

What do you do for work?

Slinging cupcakes part time at Petals Cupcakes in Newmarket.

What do you do for fun?

I drink A LOT of coffee, go on the occasional jog, watch a lot of comedy TV shows – my favourites being The Office, Kath And Kim, and currently Peep Show. Oh and making and eating food.

Did you go to university? If so, what did you study?

I am currently completing my final paper in my Visual Arts degree at university.

What is your favourite movie of all time?

There’s no way you can seriously expect me to answer this right?

What is the biggest risk you have ever taken that has paid off?

I moved to America when I was about 19-years-old to finish my last year of high school and compete in cheerleading, and it was the weirdest but coolest thing I have ever done.

Hardest moment of your twenties so far?

Convincing myself it’s okay to not know what the fuck is going on.

Best moment of your twenties so far?

This year I made pancakes without a recipe and as far as I’m concerned that was my peak.

Who do you miss?

My sister, who is my best friend and left me to study in the UK, but who also thankfully is returning to me tomorrow.

What do you like the most about yourself?

It is not easy these days to confidently discuss things you like about yourself but I am quite proud of the effort I put in to being my authentic self. I think that’s something I am glad to be able to do and that other people should be doing.

What do you like the least about yourself?

I have severe commitment issues – I’m talking like anxiety about pre-ordering movie tickets just in case I change my mind.

If you had to get a tattoo, what would you get and where would you get it? If you already have tattoos, which is your favourite and why?

I have a lot of tattoos and picking a favourite would feel wrong and cruel (they are all my children), but recently one of my favourite tattoo artists, Rene O’Donnell-Gibson, gave me the most beautiful eagle right in between my shoulder blades that I’m pretty excited about.

How would your friends describe you?

Unreliable.

How would your parents describe you?

Entertainment for the family home.

When was the last time you cried?

New Years eve. I disappointed a close friend and the guilt was eating me alive.

What are you afraid of?

The future of this planet with the recent US election fore mostly.

If you could start your twenties again, what would you do differently?

Be kinder, more confident….. and have been far smarter with my savings account.
