Four Successful Women Share Their Morning Routines
I’m a self-confessed morning person.
I love getting up ridiculously early. I love cold showers and strong coffee and watching the sun rise on my morning walk while the moon is still in the departure lounge.
I know that makes me sound like a psychopath.
I’m also obsessed with the morning routines of successful women. There’s something fascinating about the rules and rituals people follow in those one to two hours before they arrive at their desk, office or studio.
So I spoke to four of the most successful women I know, and was both surprised and delighted to discover that all of them start their day in an incredibly specific way. Nothing is left to chance, and everything is done with the intention of setting themselves up for a productive, happy day.

“My alarm goes off at 5.30am, sometimes I wake before that, but it depends how much magnesium I took the night before! I’ve always been a morning person – if I wake up too late I feel like I’m behind schedule. I get straight into my gym gear and wash my face. Kate from Skinography (her facials are spiritual) has got me onto Dermaviduals and my skin loves it. After a quick scroll on my phone to see what’s going on in the big wide world, I check on my schmoochi (daughter Olympia) who is usually still sleeping, so I give her a little kiss and a sniff of her deliciousness. Three days a week I go to the gym, once a week I do pilates, and once a week I have a massage at 6.15am – I carry my stress physically so a massage ensures that I don’t end up in too much pain (apparently I try to fit too many things into my life and don’t “rest” enough…). My trainer, Sarah at The Form Room, has seen me through falling in love (chubby), getting married (skinny), having a baby (really chubby) and then pulling myself back together again (normal Mimi size!). I’ve always been active and it’s important for my mental state that I feel fit and strong. I’m not a huge breakfast person but I do believe in having a big glass of water before anything else to rehydrate your body. I go to Orphans Kitchen a few times a week with my favourite people and the chef makes me “The Mimi Special” which consists of spinach, silverbeet, cultured macadamia, chilli and two pickled eggs. Heaven. I have always envied those women who plan their outfits the night before, but alas I am not one of them. My “uniform” involves a lot of black, a lot of cashmere jumpers from Marle and a lot of Miss Crabb silk dresses in summer. I prefer silence on my way to work; it is often the only alone time I get so I adore the peace.

“I love the morning because it’s time to myself. Before I jump in the shower I make sure to give my puppy Honey a big cuddle, take her for a walk if I’m not going to pilates, and then back home to shower and wash my face. At the moment I’ve been using the Drunk Elephant range – I like good skincare. I’m not a breakfast person but I live for coffee and might have a smoothie mid-morning. I like to arrive at the studio by 7am so I have time to run through things with my pattern maker, Rod, and get a head start on the day while it’s still quiet and the morning light is rolling in. When it comes to dressing, I’m not a planner, instead I like to dress according to my mood. My style leans towards the oversized look, lately I’ve been wearing the green ‘Trust Your Instincts’ coat, the white ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ bomber and the ‘Come in From The Cold’ knit which is a staff favourite, we all wear it when it’s chilly – it’s quite cute! If I have an important meeting I always wear a blazer because it makes me feel powerful and if I need a lift I’ll pop on MAC’s ‘Lady Danger’ red lipstick.”

“My alarm goes off at 6.30am. I’m a morning person but I like to be alone and quietly ease myself into the day. So you might think I’m grumpy, but I’m not, I just don’t really want to talk to anyone! I scroll through my emails and Instagram for twenty minutes in bed and then get up to begin my morning ritual. First I make my bed – perfectly – and then I head to the kitchen to boil the kettle for my strong plunger coffee and Rooibos tea. While the kettle boils I have a quick, hot shower and put my robe on. I cleanse my face with Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water, followed by a face massage with Bioderma Hydrabio Moisturiser. I am a dedicated breakfast person and wouldn’t dream of going to work without it. Alongside my plunger coffee and tea, I’ll either have oats with berries, coconut yogurt and Fix & Fogg almond butter, or toast with almond butter, banana and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I prefer a sweet breakfast and it must be substantial. I don’t exercise in the morning but I love the days when I can walk to work. It’s an easy twenty minute stroll from Ponsonby to The Caker on K’Road and it makes me feel warm and energised for the day ahead.

“Since moving back to New Zealand, I aim to walk for one hour, two to three mornings a week, and on those mornings my alarm goes off at 6.50am. Money-wise, I have different priorities at the moment since we are buying furniture for our new home, so I prefer free exercise over a gym membership. Before I get out of bed I jump straight onto my emails to ascertain what tasks are urgent and what can wait, I then make sure my social media for An Organised Life is ready to go. I’m a huge breakfast fan and my first meal keeps me going for hours. In the cooler months I have scrambled eggs, mushrooms, spinach and avocado, accompanied by a glass of The Beauty Chef’s Glow and Collagen tonics. In the warmer months I’ll add The Beauty Chef Collagen to a smoothie along with berries, banana, spinach and coconut water. I have a simple but effective four-step skincare routine; Arcona Four O’Clock Flower Gentle Cleansing Cream, Dr Spiller Toner, SPF50 sunscreen and FRESH Youth Preserve Face Cream – one of my absolute favourites. I’m really productive on my commute to work, I either make a lot of phone calls or I listen to podcasts. My favourites are The High Low, How I Built This, Your Creative Start, Offline with Alison Rice, and Lady Brains. They’re all very business-focused, and I love hearing people’s career stories.
