The 5 Beauty Products You Need To Make It To Work On Time

I should begin by saying that I am not a beauty guru.

Nor am I a makeup artist, a facialist (is that a thing?), a skincare expert, a dermatologist (is that the same as a skincare expert?) or even a functioning adult for that matter. This is simply a list of the beauty products I rely on every single day to make me look “not dead” and ensure I arrive at the office on time.

Women in their twenties barely have enough time to eat breakfast before work, let alone apply a full face of makeup. Therefore we need a few damn good products that we know can be applied in a hurry.

I should also point out that I have not been asked to “endorse” any of these brands – I just really like them and think you will too!

Okay enough chit chat Mads, let’s go.

Morroccan Oil Dry Shampoo

I don’t want to know a world without dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is the holy grail of hair products for twenty-something’s; it works by essentially cleaning your hair without the need to wash it (but not in a gross way? Like you should definitely still shower regularly…?) It adds texture to flat hair, removes the appearance of oil or grease and pro-longs a blow wave. Plus, anything that comes in a can that promises to improve our appearance and doesn’t cost more than rent is generally a good time.

My advice for applying dry shampoo is to separate your hair into small sections and spray the product as close to your roots as possible because this is where the nasties are, I then leave the product for about two minutes before running my fingers through. By leaving the product for a couple of minutes you give the shampoo time to surround each strand of hair and stick in place, making it last longer.

Moroccan Oil have released their own version of this cult hair product in two shades to suit different hair colours; Light Hair Tones and Dark Hair Tones.

M.A.C Strobe Cream

M.A.C Strobe Cream has been a fixture in makeup artist’s kits, like forever, but I’m not sure if any of us knew what to do with it until our twenties. Strobe Cream is essentially moisturiser packed to the brim with pearly, iridescent particles that make our skin appear soft, sexy and healthy- the opposite of how we feel during the work week.

When it comes to Strobe Cream, a little goes a long way, so while it might seem a little expensive at $70 a pop, a bottle should last you almost a year. Those sexy iridescent particles work by attracting light to different areas of your face, giving the illusion that it is far more awake and alert than it actually is. I apply mine in upward strokes (rather than down towards my neck) so that the moisturiser moves into my pores, and I focus on my cheeks and cheekbones, bow of the mouth, nose, chin and sometimes the base of my eyelids. I purposefully don’t apply it to my forehead because I figure since I’m already running late, that area will get it’s own dose of shine from perspiration. If you’re a no-makeup-makeup kind of girl then it doesn’t get much better than this.

Stila Aqua Glow Serum Concealer

The importance of concealer can not be overstated. Concealer hides a multitude of sins; from redness, to dark circles under your eyes, to that pimple on your forehead that just won’t chill. Stila Aqua Glow Serum Concealer is the product I apply immediately after my Strobe Cream, but unlike a moisturiser, the trick with concealer is to use as tiny amount as possible.

I particularly like the Stila concealer because it is weightless and buildable, meaning that no matter how poorly I apply it, it won’t look “cakey”. I apply it around the corners of my nose, under my eyes but not too far down towards my cheeks, and here’s the game changer: I then use a thin concealer brush to paint a very straight line down the middle of my nose with the concealer which I then soften with a beauty blender. This straightens my nose and makes it appear narrower (shout out to all the girls with big noses who totally get me on this).

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour

Eyebrows are so important. I didn’t know how important they were until about two years ago and I now literally curl over and die when I look at photos of myself from before 2014.

Eyebrows essentially frame your face, and The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour is like a magic marker that creates the illusion that your overall appearance is far more groomed than it actually is.

To begin with, I fluff up my brows using a grooming brush or an unused mascara wand. I then use the brow pen to follow the natural direction of my brows and do little hair strokes all the way to the brow tail and extend it slightly at the end. I then go back over with a more steady line at the base of my eyebrow to give it definition, starting with less colour and then building it up as needed. I finish by fluffing up my eyebrows again to break up any clumps of product.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour comes in six shades and I use the ‘Light’ shade because I’m basically albino. Oh, and a few words to the wise: you must treat your eyebrows like sisters and not twins.

Garnier Micellar Water

This is actually a product I use at the end of every day but it sets you up really well for the following morning’s mad rush and it’s cheap as chips. I recently read on Into The Gloss that our skin is about 60 percent more absorbent to everything while we are sleeping and that night time is when skin rejuvenation works all it’s wonders. So you can imagine how damaging it is when we forget, or choose not to take off our makeup each day. Sleeping in makeup essentially means we are sleeping with free radicals on our face, which are the pollutants that build up on our skin from factors like stress, smoke, food and alcohol. If those free radicals aren’t removed, they start to break down all the good collagen in our skin which is the stuff that makes us look twenty-something and not forty-something.

Micellar water and micellar wipes dissolve makeup, dirt and pollution to leave our skin looking shiny and polished like our dad’s business shoes, but the best part is that we don’t need to wash it off afterwards, so it’s super time efficient for twenty-something’s.
