What Do Beauty Insiders Put On Their Face? Part Two

25.02.20

What do beauty insiders put on their face? Like what do they actually put on their face. Not what they’re trying to sell us or being paid to write about, I mean what’s the best mascara they’ve ever used, do they exfoliate, what is sitting in their shower right this second, and do they really love sheet masks or are they just doing it for the ‘gram?

I need to know these things, so I asked three of my most-trusted, knowledgeable and perfectly-groomed beauty insiders. Here’s what they said:

Fiona Goddard, Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist

Serum or oil?

BOTH! Because I am really dry and sensitive I find using both keeps my skin from looking dull or as tired as I actually feel. At the moment I’ve been seeing amazing results with the Emma Lewisham Skin Reset Concentrated Hyperpigmentation Serum for pigmentation around my eyes and cheeks – both areas have noticeably faded after using the serum everyday for a couple of months. A more recent discovery is the Go-To Face Hero Oil which is really nourishing and soaks into the skin well without being greasy. It’s also an accessible price point so it won’t cost you a week’s worth of groceries like some beauty products.

The one makeup product you wear every single day?

Clear brow gel! Brushing my brows up instantly perks my face up so I love one that has a strong hold. Benefit 24-Hour Brow Setter has been my go-to formula for years – although the packaging is not cute.

The one makeup product you never wear?

Lipliner, or even lipstick for that matter. I find it instantly adds ten years to my face so you’ll only ever see me wearing a sheer glossy colour or lip balm.

Do you exfoliate? How often and with what?

Yes, I exfoliate once a week using the Tribeca Skin Tonics Exfoliating Balm. This stuff is heaven for my extra dry sensitive skin, I always feel born-again after using it!

What beauty products are in your shower right now?

Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub for that once or twice a year  when I can have an extra-long shower. I love using Glossier Body Hero Daily Oil Wash for shaving my legs – it has such a nice creamy lather! I’ve also found that by using it for shaving it’s lasted me a really long time. And Kérastase Extensioniste Shampoo and Masque.

Favourite makeup remover?

The OG Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil for everyday use and the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm for travel.

Sheet masks – love them or hate them?

I love the idea of pampering myself and taking time out in the day – plus how nice my skin looks afterwards! – but I’m not a fan of the waste aspect that comes with a single-use sheet mask. I feel better off investing in a treatment-based product that can sit on my beauty shelf and be used over and over again.

The best concealer you’ve ever used?

Estée Lauder Double Wear Radiant Concealer. It’s a really full-coverage formula so you don’t need a lot, and it’s great for my fellow mums who haven’t had a lot of sleep!

The best mascara you’ve ever used?

Lancôme Hypnôse and Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye.

All-time favourite lip product?

La Mer’s The Lip Balm forever and always! Or if you’re on a budget, the Kosasport Lip Fuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm is a perfect dupe.

Jaimee Lupton, Founder of MONDAY Haircare

Serum or oil?

I apply Aspect Dr Multi B Plus Serum every morning and if my skin is a little dry I use Re.Form Serum by Re.Skin.

The one makeup product you wear every single day?

MAC Cosmetics Brow Gel in Clear for perfectly set brows, By Terry Lip-liner in Perfect Nude and Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Face Primer – obsessed!

The one makeup product you never wear?

EYELINER. I feel like it closes in my eyes.

Do you exfoliate? How often and with what?

Yes, I use the Aspect Dr Exfol A Plus Serum which is a retinol and I swear by it. I started using it about a year ago and my skin has never looked better!

What beauty products are in your shower right now?

MONDAY Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. I’m probably slightly bias but it’s the best smelling salon-quality haircare on the supermarket shelf (launching end of March!). I also always have a microfibre cloth in my bathroom to remove all of my make up.

Favourite makeup remover?

I always double cleanse at night with the Aspect Dr Deep Clean Facial Cleanser.

Sheet masks – love them or hate them?

Do you know what…I used to love them and use them all the time. They were my guilty pleasure every night before bed until my boyfriend pointed out to me that I was spending hundreds of dollars on sheet masks that cost manufacturers about ten cents to make. It’s fair to say he ruined them for me and I haven’t used them since!

The best concealer you’ve ever used?

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer for under my eyes and NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer for any blemishes.

The best mascara you’ve ever used?

I was a diehard Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara girl for about ten years until I discovered Too Faced Damn Girl 24 Hour Mascara. That stuff is the best.

All-time favourite lip product?

Glossier Balm Dotcom. I never leave the U.S. without stocking up on it for my entire family – my nieces, sister and my mum.

Zeenat Wilkinson, Founder of Sauce

Serum or oil?

Both serums and oils pull their weight, but oils are much more effective in the long run (in my humble opinion) once you find one that works for your skin type. I am in my early 30s and my skin type is combination-to-dehydrated skin, and to top it all off I’ve had the most awful hormonal acne lately! But nevertheless I’ve continued to use oils intuitively throughout the acne highs and lows. On days when my skin is flaring up, I only use a teeny tiny bit around my under-eyes and dry patches around my nose. I swear by Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face OilPai Skincare Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil and Trilogy and Biologi products for more affordable options.

The one makeup product you wear every single day?

Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint in Bare Popsicle or Bare Melon for hydration and hint of colour.

The one makeup product you never wear?

Never say never, but I don’t think I’ve ever met a powder highlighter that I’ve genuinely liked. I am more of a creamy highlighter type-of-person.

Do you exfoliate? How often and with what?

I rarely ever exfoliate! I know! But if I do, it’s always extremely mild. I find gentle physical exfoliators much more effective on my skin. Grown Alchemist does one with pink grapefruit that helps remove dead skin cells. Aesop does a good one too. I limit it to once a week.

What beauty products are in your shower right now?

I am BIG on indulgent showers. I find water incredibly healing and cleansing. Currently, I’m loving the Dermalogica and Kiehl’s shower ranges. The Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil and Thermafoliant Body Scrub with Indian Bamboo Stem and Papain are both beautiful. Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Smoothing Oil-To-Foam Body Cleanser smells like a holiday in the Bahamas! So divine.

Favourite makeup remover?

Monastery Made’s Cleansing Oil is beautiful. I follow it up with Syrene’s Aqualgel Oil To Foam Cleanser. On days when I am rushing to get into bed, I do two rounds of Syrene’s Aquagel Oil To Foam Cleanser, and that helps take it all off without stripping my skin.

Sheet masks – love them or hate them?

I absolutely love sheet masks. Estée Lauder’s ANR Concentrated Recovery Powerfoil Mask and Syrene’s Power Masque are my go-tos. But, in saying that, I feel like I am always eating or drinking or moving around so I don’t think I use them as often as I would like to, but after a long flight a good sheet mask does wonders.

The best concealer you’ve ever used?

MAC Cosmetics studio fix 24-hour smooth wear concealer suits my skin tone and helps cover my acne scars.

The best mascara you’ve ever used?

I am very promiscuous with mascaras. Sometimes it’s Chanel, sometimes Estée Lauder and sometimes MAC, but lately I have been using L’Oreal’s Paradise Lash Primer and Mascara, and this seems to do the trick.

All-time favourite lip product?

It’s tough to pick one as I am big on hydrated lips. My lips tend to dry up quickly, these three products are my holy grail lip products: Clinique’s Moisture Surge Lip Treatment, Bobbi Brown Lip Balm and La Mer The Lip Balm.
