When it comes to iconic Australian fashion it doesn’t get much better than womenswear label Zimmermann. Talented sister duo Nicky and Simone Zimmermann are getting ready to present their Spring ’17 Collection at New York Fashion Week in just under 48 hours so here are a few reasons why these two girls are the ultimate #CAREERGOALS…

TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS

Australian siblings Nicky and Simone Zimmermann started their eponymous label in Sydney in 1991. Nicky studied fashion at the prestigious Sydney Institute of Design which is famous for producing some of Australia’s most exciting young talent such as designer Dion Lee. After graduating, Nicky opened a small stall at the Paddington Markets where she sold her designs before being spotted by Australian Vogue and offered a two-page editorial – not bad for a “nobody” in the fashion industry.

Over twenty years later, the girls still call Sydney home and make the most of living in such an amazing city with their young families (yes they are both mothers too!). Nicky is constantly inspired by the Sydney lifestyle, the light and the vibrant colours, which are reflected in her designs.

SISTER SISTER

After Nicky was noticed by Australian Vogue she, unsurprisingly, received a lot of attention for her young brand and decided to open a small store in Darlinghurst. It was at this point that she realised she needed someone to come on board and provide her with the necessary business skills to guide Zimmermann in the right direction and protect the brand – and who better than her sister!

Today, Nicky plays the role of creative director and Simone is the COO (Chief Operating Officer). Wait – sister’s who run a multi-million dollar international business together and still haven’t killed each other?! Very impressive, ladies. These sister’s trust each other deeply and over time have learned how to play to each other’s strength. Nicky is in charge of the creative components of the business and Simone takes care of operations, ensuring the overall environment of their creative space is conducive to Nicky producing her best work.

GAME PLAN

Nicky and Simone have always been interested in moving their brand forward and striving to be better, they don’t want Zimmermann to be doing the same thing it was doing ten years ago. The girls consider themselves “problem solvers” who see challenges as obstacles to overcome rather than disasters. For example, in recent years the shift to online-shopping has reached a critical mass and consumers are spending less time in physical stores than ever before, Nicky and Simone saw this as an exciting opportunity for the brand to connect with even more people internationally through their online store. As of today, their e-store remains one of Zimmermann’s top performing retail outlets.

It is arguably their longevity as a brand that is the most impressive quality to fashion insiders and influencers alike. In such a competitive and cut throat industry, Zimmermann continues to be one of the most sought after and coveted swimwear labels, and the girls have worked hard to stay relevant and necessary within the fashion landscape.

CELEBRITY GIRL GANG

It would be wrong to discuss the Zimmermann business story without mentioning the enviable celebrity following they have amassed over the years! The label have always described the typical Zimmermann girl as “optimistic, feminine and carefree”, and judging by the bevy of beauties who consider themselves Zimmermann fans they should also add “strong” and “empowered” to that list.

A Beyonce vacay is not complete without an Instagram of her wearing a coveted Zimmermann garment in the form of a swimsuit, coverup or sundress. Kendall Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, and Australian beauties Jessica Gomes and Miranda Kerr have also been spotted in the designs on multiple occasions. But what Nicky and Simone have done so well is create clothing that resonates with both the aforementioned superstars as well as the rest of us. Zimmermann is known for creating some of the world’s best swimwear that is both beautiful and functional, and you’re just as likely to see a twenty-something rocking a Zimmermann bikini at a New Zealand beach as you are to spot Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wearing one of their maxi dresses in Beverly Hills.

Women all over the world can now get their Zimmermann fix at department stores like Barney’s, Saks 5th avenue, Harvey Nichols and, of course, David Jones in Australia. As well as online at Net-A-Porter or Shop Bop, and their beautiful flagship stores in Australia, Los Angeles and New York.

So, as we wait patiently for the Zimmermann show to begin at NYFW and see which pieces will become the most coveted of the season (AKA what will be featuring on Beyonce’s yacht in the upcoming months), perhaps we should indulge in a little online shopping just to get in the Zimmerman ‘”spirit”?
